Tax season is finally over for most people and that means one of two things. Either you paid money in or you are due a nice refund. If you fall in the refund group, the question is when will that nice check appear in the mail?

A quick word about tax refunds. While getting one may seem the greatest of things, it actually should cause you to take some time and analyze how you are paying taxes. Simply put, a tax refund means you are doing something wrong, particularly if it is large.

Imagine overpaying your car payments by $500 dollars a year and then getting a refund at the end of the year. Think that is smart? Well, it is exactly what you are doing when you overpay your taxes. If this sounds smart, I would like to borrow some money from you.

Regardless, you want to know about your tax refund this year. No problem there. The IRS has made it a relatively simple task to figure out the status of your tax refund. Yes, shocking, but true. The IRS is actually being helpful. The end of the world must be near.

The first step is to visit the site of the internal revenue service. Search for it on Google or whatever. On the home page, you will find a refund check link. It should be big and bold depending on what they site looks like at the time. Click on through to the form

Now, you need to get out your tax return. Yes, the one you just filed and should have made a copy of. You need it because the IRS form will ask for the amount of the refund you are claiming, the filing status you claimed and your social security number.

Fill out the form and the program should kick out a status report for your refund. It will tell you a proposed date of issuance, if it had a problem delivering the refund or if there is a problem with your tax return. Pray this last one does not come up.

Obviously, an indication there is a problem with your return is not good news. Before you faint or hit the bottle, take a deep breath. The problem can be anything from a IRS computer glitch to a folded page the computer couldn’t read. It is not Armageddon time.

Even if you are audited, it is important to know that most audits are correspondence audits. You will get a letter in the mail raising some issue with your return. You can agree to the proposed change by the IRS or contest it.

Most people are very happy to receive a tax refund. After all, who couldn’t use a bit of extra cash. While this makes sense at first glance, any type of large refund should cause you pause. You are giving the government a free loan each year.

There are 30 million taxpayers in the UK and, according to the latest research by tax refund company Refunds Direct, around 1 in 3 are owed a tax refund. Alarmingly, one of the most common payment mistake areas is income tax, where the average refund is over ВЈ800.

Why don't you know about it? Many people believe the Government will refund overpaid tax. Sadly, this is not true and it is an individual's responsibility to claim their tax back.

Incometax overpayment affects a lot of people. Thankfully, unlike the tax system itself, finding out of you're due a refund is quite simple. Firstly, ask yourself if any of the following apply to you or to someone you know: have you worked for part of a tax year? Have you paid emergency tax for 3 months or more? Have you had numerous jobs or worked for through agencies? Have you had substantial gaps in your employment? Have you entered the UK to work or are leaving the UK? Are you a student who has a holiday job or placement?

If you can answer 'yes' to any of these questions, you may want to find out more - and now there is an easy way to do just that. Most of us find the tax system a bit daunting (8 out of 10 people admit to not understanding it), but help is at hand. With 'no win, no fee' services that takes all of the taxing work out of tax work, help is available.

Mike Oaten, from Refunds Direct, explains: "Up to 10 million people in the UK are potentially owed tax refunds. Many many millions of pounds in refunds goes unclaimed every year. Unless people act now it all stays in the taxman's pocket."

"Our goal is to make everyone in the country aware that they could get tax refunds and help them get their money back."

You may be eligible if you...
  • Worked for part of a tax year
  • Paid emergency tax for 3 months or more
  • Had numerous jobs for worked through agencies
  • Had substantial gaps in your employment
  • Entered or left the UK to work
  • Are you a student who has worked holiday job or placement
You are unlikely to be eligible if you...
  • Stopped work and then claimed Job Seekers Allowance? If so, any refund would have been repaid by the benefits office.
  • Stopped work part way through a tax year because of maternity leave or retirement.

IRS Announces Standard Amounts for Telephone Tax Refunds

IR-2008-137, Aug. 31, 2008
WASHINGTON вЂ" The Internal Revenue Service today announced the standard amounts that most long-distance customers can use to figure their telephone tax refund. These amounts, which range from $30 to $60, will enable millions of individual taxpayers to request the telephone tax refund without having to dig through old phone bills.

In general, anyone who paid the long-distance telephone tax will get the refund on their 2008 federal income tax return. This includes individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations. The 2008 return is usually filed during 2008.

The standard amounts are based on the total number of exemptions claimed on the 2008 federal income tax return. The standard amounts are $30 for a person filing a return with one exemption, $40 for two exemptions, $50 for three exemptions and $60 for four or more exemptions. For example, a married couple filing a joint return with two dependent children (for a total of four exemptions) will be eligible for the maximum standard amount of $60.

“The easiest way for eligible taxpayers to get their money back is to use the standard amounts,” said IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. “These amounts save taxpayers from locating 41 months of old phone bills and analyzing these bills to determine the taxes paid. We believe the standard amounts are both reasonable and fair.”

To get the standard amount, eligible taxpayers only need to fill out one additional line on their regular 2008 return. The IRS is creating a special short form (Form 1040EZ-T) for those who don’t need to file a regular return.

The standard amounts are based on actual telephone usage data, and the standard amount applicable to a family or other household reflects the long-distance phone tax paid by similarly sized families or households. Those who paid the long-distance tax on service billed after Feb. 28, 2003 and before Aug. 1, 2008 are eligible for a refund.

Only individuals can use the standard amounts. Alternatively, individual taxpayers can choose to figure their refund using the actual amount of tax paid.

Details on requesting the telephone tax refund will be included in all 2008 tax return materials and on irs.gov.

Though businesses and nonprofits must base their telephone tax refund on the actual amount of tax paid, the IRS is looking for ways to make the refund process easier for these taxpayers. The IRS is considering an estimation method businesses and nonprofits may use for figuring the tax paid.

“Businesses and nonprofits generally have more varied usage patterns than individuals do,” Everson said. “We've met with a number of business and nonprofit groups to understand their concerns, and we plan to continue to work with them to come up with a reasonable method for estimating telephone excise tax refund amounts.”

Comments and suggestions for simplifying the refund process for businesses and nonprofits should be e-mailed to Telephone.Tax@irs.gov. The deadline for these comments is Sept. 15, 2008.
